Civil servants urged to be productive and efficient

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 1ST 2012 (CUOPM) – Civil servants are being urged to give the general public professional and efficient service.

That comment from Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas during his weekly radio programme “Ask the Prime Minister,” after a caller from Mansion pleaded for government to take action against public officers who were non-productive and not showing up for work.

Referring to the recent statement from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that further fiscal sustainability will focus on public financial management, the civil service, the social security system and the strengthening of the social safety net, Dr. Douglas said government is demanding that public servants work.

“That they give the government their 8 hours per day that they are being paid for and those, as this caller has said that some are working a second job, using government time to do a second job, and getting full pay by government, that has to come to an end and that is exactly what we mean when we speak of continuing to reform the civil service,” Prime Minister Douglas told listeners.

“This kind of nonsense has to come to an end. The caller from Mansion is right she knows exactly what she is talking about,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

Responding to another caller who complained that some civil servants were not giving the public efficient service and were hiding under the cloak of being party supporters, Dr. Douglas said the governing St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party as a Party has done its very best to ensure that its supporters and other citizens of this country are provided opportunities for employment.

“I am one those who believe very strongly and anyone who knows me, I believe in giving people a chance and an opportunity , it is up to you once you’ve been given that opportunity and chance to maintain it. If you fail because of your attitude, poor performance then you should go simple as that,” said Dr. Douglas.
